Message first and get it operational, and then build slowly off from that. I presume your car is higher mileage, and who knows what kind of condition the engine will be in, so there will be problems that inevitably arise. The last thing you want is your car sitting around for a looong time, and then you finally get it built the way you want but then the old parts don't handle the new power and break. You will be pissed because of the further delay in excitement, added to the fact you may or may not have the funds to cover these additional and unaccounted-for expenses.

Drive it around, get to know the car, and work out the bugs. It will also give you more time to decide exactly what your goals are, as we often start a project but decide in retrospect it may have been better to have done things otherwise...You may end up wanting more power than you thought, or even being content with it as is (probably not :P ).
